If you are considering studying in Canada, you'll need to obtain a study permit. In this article, we'll outline five essential steps to guide you in obtaining your study permit and begin your academic journey in Canada.

Step 1: Choose Your Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

Before applying for a study permit, you'll need to be accepted into a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. DLIs are universities, colleges, and other educational institutions approved by the Canadian government to host international students. Research your options, explore programs offered, and select the DLI that best aligns with your academic goals and interests.

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

Once you've been accepted into a DLI, it's time to gather the necessary documents for your study permit application. These may include:

• Letter of acceptance (LOA) from the DLI.

• Provincial attestation letter (PAL) from a province or territory

• Proof of identity (passport or travel document).

• Proof of financial support to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation.

• Letter of explanation demonstrating your reasons for studying in Canada and your understanding of your student responsibilities.

• Police clearance certificate (if applicable).

• Medical exam results (if required).

IRCC’s new Letter of Acceptance (LOA) verification process

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently rolled out a new LOA verification process, effective December 1, 2023. This policy requires DLIs across Canada to manually authenticate every LOA received from international students outside of Canada, ensuring a more robust and trustworthy application process for prospective students.

IRCC’s new Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)

As of January 22, 2024, IRCC mandates that each province issue a PAL to study permit applicants. This requirement encompasses various categories of international students, such as those applying for certificate and diploma programs, undergraduate degrees, and study programs exceeding six months in duration. Failure to provide a PAL with the study permit application, unless exempt, will result in the application being returned, along with any associated fees.

Step 3: Apply Online and Submit Application

Once all required documents have been gathered, the next step is to submit your study permit application. In most cases, you must apply online through the IRCC website. You may be eligible to apply on paper through a Visa Application Centre (VAC) if you have a disability that prevents you from applying online or if you hold an identity or travel document for non-national residents, refugees, or stateless persons. Follow the application instructions carefully, pay the required fees, and submit your application along with all supporting documents.

Step 4: Attend Biometrics Appointment (if required)

Depending on your country of residence, you may need to attend a biometrics appointment to provide fingerprints and a photo. Biometrics are used to confirm your identity and help ensure the security of your application. If biometrics are required, schedule an appointment at a designated location and attend as instructed.

Step 5: Await Decision and Prepare for Arrival

After submitting your study permit application and attending any required biometrics appointments, the next step is waiting for a decision. Processing times can vary depending on factors such as your country of residence, ranging from a few weeks to several months.

If you live outside of Canada, once your study permit is approved, you'll be issued a Letter of Introduction along with a travel visa (if needed for your country of citizenship). These documents enable you to travel to a Canadian Port of Entry (POE) to acquire your study permit. You must collect your study permit in person upon arrival at a Canadian POE.

If you are currently residing within Canada and your application is approved, your study permit will be mailed directly to you.

Maintain Your Legal Status

Ensuring you maintain your status as an international student in Canada is crucial once your study permit is approved. To remain legally compliant, remember to adhere to the following requirements:

• Consistently enroll at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI);

• Actively progress towards completing your program;
